Our story

Our Story

The Fabric Shop is the culmination of almost three decades of expertise and experience in the soft furnishings industry. Here at The Fabric Shop we are all very proud to say that today we remain a completely family run and operated business just like we did almost 30 years ago. My parents David and June started the business 30 years ago. My Mum had a passion for interior design and my dad (being an engineer) was the perfect compliment to Mum’s talents as he was able to expertly design and install the soft furnihshings. It became clear that retail premises were the next step for Mum and Dad and they opened their first shop on Dundee’s Perth Road. It became very clear that this tiny shop was far too small for them and soon after they moved into the much roomier premises next door! The Fabric Shop was a familiar landmark on the Perth Road for almost 15 years. During this time more family members joined the business including me, my husband (my boyfriend at that time!) and my cousin Larah. Our sister company The Scottish Shutter Company was born in our Perth Road showroom and from then we have really gone from strength to strength. BBC Breakfast TV even filmed us and made a feature about us back in 2009 as an example of a family business bucking the trend and succeeding during the hard economic times. Why? Because we were doing things differently. Our core values and our ethos remains the same today as they always have, to provide the best possible advice and products coupled with outstanding customer service.

In 2009 we took another giant leap and moved to much bigger, brighter and better premises in Broughty Ferry. We now have a showroom dedicated to showcasing the latest designs in soft furnishings and specialist blinds. It is also home to The Scottish Shutter Company and again, a dedicated shutter showroom.

We were privilledged in 2010 when we realised we had run out of family members that a fantastic young man called Stevie wanted to come and work with us. Just as it was very hard for us to take on a mogul (otherwise known as a non-family member!) we’re sure it was equally hard for someone outwith our family to enter the circle! Anyway, Stevie is still with us today and plays a very important role in our business. Our latest team member is James. He plays a very valuable role assisting Stevie and is also a fantastic asset to our business.
